Day Fifty Four

Saturday, May 14, 2011
Distance: 27.7 Miles

I woke up early and set off west-southwest towards McArthur. The day was hot and humid, and then it rained. I was sweaty and then I got dumped on. Bad times.

This day was rough, however, for another reason - a dog. A brown Labrador mix spotted me and then came bounding up to greet me. I said hello and then the dog followed me. And followed me. And did not stop following me. He roamed all around me and ran into and out of the street almost getting hit several times and nearly causing one significant collision. The dog had no tags. The police and sheriff were called, but they wouldn't, couldn't, didn't summon any interest. I couldn't command the dog. And he wouldn't leave. So I had a Pig-Pen cloud of dilemma and disaster trailing me for nine miles in heat, sweat, humidity, thunder, and rain. A mile before the end of the day, a car recognized, pulled over, and shuffled the brown dog into his car and called his son to get him. He seemed passively-peeved at me for some unspoken and impossible-to-stick wrong I had committed, but fuck that. I walked and this dog thought I was his pack. I didn't want it, and I tried, ineffectively, to get someone to deal with it. I guess rural Ohio is a real busy place and public servants can't be expected to serve the public interest. I was minding my own business and some owner didn't have the decency to restrain her dog.

  2. Unlike the natives, the dog, it seems to me, was cooperative and friendly. No?? Grandfather

  3. I don't know if you have already come across such a program but if not you may find this helpful. Dragon Dictation is free for the iphone and, as the name would indicate, allows you to speak into the phone and it types up your sentences for you. This could save you some time and frustration when typing your posts on the phone. I use it for all long text messages now. Hope this helps! Miss you Pete!
